Connecting Venn diagrams and Pascal's triangle is cool, but there's a much easier way to show why it doubles: For each old region, there is now one with D and one without D, so you double the amount of regions.

is there a reason you couldn't just go to the third dimension and have overlapping spheres instead of two-dimensional overlapping circles? or is the goal here to keep everything 2D?
