Pools can get like this when people neglect it and cover it for a long period of time without doing anything to it. When you cover your pool you need to routinely put chlorine and shock ( ground up chlorine ) in it to keep it nice and blue

We drained our pool to start this process the weekend before Memorial Day 2015 ... a storm started to form, and weather people said we'd get about 2" ... almost 2' of rain later, the water table under the pool had risen, lifting our cement and rebar pool out of the ground, snapping all the plumbing, decking, etc, and them when it was in the air, it snapped in half and the shallow end came crashing back down. What was supposed to be simple maintenance to prolong our pool's life, ended up costing $10k to demo our pool ...
