I think with Thompson, you have to bear in mind that he took over during the height of ww2, when materials, staff and money was at an absolute premium. His decision to eschew the more maintenance intensive locos in place of comparatively simpler designs makes a lot of sense, particularly as everyone else was doing it too. The b1 for example was literally a parts bin loco that resulted in an excellent do anything loco that the lner had probably needed for two decades

Big beasties much more suited to freight than passenger work, I quite like these, and Thompsons work as a whole

Decent review there Sam 2-6-4 locomotives do look quite good especially the standard class 4mt.
I wouldn’t say Thompson ruined the P2, they were rebuilt during a time where there wasn’t a lot of money to spend so to save up he rebuilt an already existing locomotive.

Love the look of this L1 locomotive in the LNER green! I also like the amount of details on this model!

hi sam.. what a difference a few years make.. not a complicated model no fancy features and was at a decent price.. if hornby would reintroduce this model i reckon the rrp would be around 220/240.pounds.

If only they make them like they used to do, due to hornby’s recent record I couldn’t trust them without another review if they produce a newly manufactured batch. Excellent review.

I do like having a few large tank engines on my layout. I picked up one of these on Ebay for just £51. The cab roof comes off on mine. Not sure if it's supposed to, but it means it was easy to add a crew and you can see the cab detail really well.

I think it also makes a nice contrast to my LMS Fowler class 4p 2-6-4 which has the gorgeous crimson lake livery. That one only cost me £42 on Ebay. So yes you can still pick up the odd bargain if you look hard enough.

Love the livery and the white bands around the wheels

I haven't got any model trains yet because I'm pretty new to the community you think I should get a E2 Tank Engine or a pannier tank

Sam it may be a old one but it is a good one I Wish Hornby would remember those days when they made a good product at a fare price. Back when I could recommend them to my friends over other manufacturers I won’t mention. You are lucky to have one . Great video.

The lamps you mentioned are electric lamps fitted to the class in ths same way that the Bulleid pacifics had too. They were not removeable like oil lamps were, but were wired in. Lamp holders were also fitted in case an oil lamp had to be used to replace a faulty electrical one.

I just got a second hand model, British Railways livery with the 9011 running number at a hobby shop in the Denver area for $100. Its an excellent runner with a small rake of coal wagons and a brake van.

The Hornby Pullman coaches have that overengineered coupling design as well, the bogies are quite prone to locking up on curves and gradients, maybe it's the same on most modern Hornby coaches? I do have some Roco/Fleischmann European coaches with similar kinematic couplings, but they function much better than Hornby's attempt lol.

Personally I agree with many of the recent revisions of history regarding Edward Thompson, I personally feel he was a victim of war-time austerity rather than outright hatred for anything Gresley. But anyway, Exellent review Sam!

The prototypes small driving wheels were to enable quicker acceleration on heavy suburban services where stop/start was more frequent, distances between stops was smaller and the time tables were more punishing. It was a trick employed a few times by various CME's of railway companies, unfortunately not always to the locomotive's benefit.

I know this might be a stupid request, but is there any chance to see a new video with old models like Triang or Wren. I remember watching some of those videos, but i'm sure it would be interesting for newer viewers.
Maybe just a running session with them and a modern counterpart, or something involving 3D printing to fix something broken.

“Pressure -based paraphernalia”. Absolutely first class phraseology! Here’s my paraphrase of your original to try and work it into your next review: “air-actuated accoutrements!”
