Shallot Harvest 2024

Harvested the shallots this morning and another quick look around the garden

Nice looking crop of roots! Yep it does take quite a while to fully dry and cure those babies until the husks dry/firm up and the moisture content reaches optimal storage levels.

I use my soil screener to dry things in the shade - a simple 3ft square wood frame made with 2x4 and then stapled 1/4" hardware cloth to the bottom. Keeps the air circulating and I haven't seen any issues with mold. This usually takes about 3-4 weeks to dry, then they get clipped leaving about 2" of stem, roots removed/cleaned and then they sit in cardboard trays for maybe another 2-3 weeks, then stored away. * I should add that I grow only hardneck 'Music' variety.

Boy the garden looks great! The shallots WoW that’s a lot good job, . I’m glad your bean plants are coming back. I take it no more problems with the woodchuck? They are very destructive and I don’t like them around my garden either. Hope things keep going well for you. Take Care! Chuck Henry.

I have never grown shallots, but have had my share of squash borers. We took them out of the vines and sprayed. Always fighting them.

That picking basket is a great idea. I may end up making something just like that so I don't end up walking around with a bunch of veggies in my hat or shirt.

Great harvest, well worth the effort that you put into your garden, 🪴, I have purchased a new toy, but for some unknown reason the moles do not like it, 😂, , 😱☠️🧨, and my HOG is now on the road, just waiting for license plate,

Good morning 🌅, URHC, I’ve only just started watching, 👀, there is a French recipe. I cannot remember what it’s called that you might be interested in., that is shallots sautéed I think in butter, and pasta, with a creamy sauce, it tastes very nice, France
