Designing Roland TR-808 Mods for Doctor Mix - Synthchaser #136

Claudio from @Doctormix has been busy repairing and modding his Roland TR-808 drum machine and asked if I could help design some mods for the hand claps. In this video I show you my approach to designing mods, and give a little introduction to RC time constants, which are used in all analog synthesis circuits.

See and hear the mods I came up with in action in the new @Doctormix video here, and be sure to subscribe to the awesome @Doctormix channel!

Details of the mods designed in this video are available here:

Parts, service and synthesizers available on my website. I buy broken synthesizers!

I wish you were my Analog Electronics teacher back in the days I was a student.

Clever trigger mod on your 555 circuit. I've always just used a dual 556 and hooked them up sequentially, so one triggers the other. That lets you get full 0-100% duty cycle on the PWM.

Great video! I really enjoyed watching you explain the schematic.

This has to be one of my favourite Synthchaser videos! Thanks for the theory, explained at a nice level, not too high, not too low... Dr. Mix is going to end up with the most flexible 808 claps ever!

Very interesting video! Sooner or later I need to mod also my OB8 with its power up monitor circuit. Anyway I love these collaborations between Youtubers, and Claudio is really funny especially when he sings and plays Samba de Orfeu with its Prophet 5 :-)

You don’t see service manuals like that anymore...Good work!

I’m not gonna open up my 808 for this (that thing is a hell to service) but I found a document on my computer downloaded ages ago. These (partially) redrawn schematics show a 27n capacitor instead of the 2n7 from the original schematic.

This channel is so much more my vibe than Doctormix LOL. He can't even go 10 seconds without stopping to shout at you to like & subscribe, stopping to tell you about some course he's selling, or just compulsively screaming "NEXT!" It really surprises me that 740k people like that kind of verbal abuse. Apparently it's a 'me' problem.

I wish Louis Rossmann was still doing nerdy videos of soldering things. At least I've got Synthchaser!

Yeah but can Synthchaser tell me why my DX21 makes odd noises and says "check level 30" on its test routine, when it should say "check level" and put out a 440hz sine wave is it a dud YM3012 chip or something else ? great video

Would be lovely if you could sell diy kits for that stuff. I would buy it :)
