I used GIMP a long time ago, when this was default, and I get that they started grouping the tools by default. It's to focus more on the keybind efficiency, so that they could demonstrate versatility of the software compared to competitors who are ahead on this. I think GIMP as a freeware is a big threat to professional tools, and I would love to see developers add more unique features in the future. Perhaps AI tools and suggestions, perhaps an easier interface for importing and exporting data, or maybe better integrations with analogue-digital drawing tools. There's so much potential in our era of digital art and creation tools.
