#NDP2020 Theme Song - Everything I Am

“Everything I Am” is the theme song for this year's NDP 2020.

While 2020 has been a challenging year for Singapore, we have seen many Singaporeans rallying around and helping one another through difficult times. The NDP 2020 theme song, “Everything I Am”, includes themes of family, togetherness, kindness, and gratitude. The music video features scenes inspired by stories of everyday Singaporeans, and reminds us to be appreciative of each other and the communities that support us.

Music & Lyrics Composed by Joshua Wan
Produced & Arranged by Sydney Tan / Joshua Wan
Directed by He Shuming

Lyrics:
I want you to understand
Because of you, I am who I am
Because of who you are
I can be Everything I am

Show me how I should be strong
Teach me that I can be weak
Because of who you are
I can find anything I seek

And In each other, there will be
The colours of your tapestry
Colours you’ve never seen

Here's to my home, to my homeland
To every shining crystal in the sand
Because of who you are
I can be everything I am
Here's to you, to my homeland
I hold this precious jewel in my hand
Because of who you are
I can be everything I am

Teacher teach me to be kind
Quick to embrace
And slow to close my mind
If we reach that star
We'll have the universe in time

And In each other, there will be
The fabric of our destiny
It's more than you and me

Here's to my home, to my homeland
A sea of shining crystals in the sand
Because of who you are
I can be everything I am

Here's to you, Singapore (homeland)
Here's to my people I could want nothing more
Here's to you, Singapore (homeland)
We hold this precious jewel in our hands

Because of who you are
Because of who you are
I can be everything I am

Reading all the comments, I can understand why some would like a more upbeat song. The song that actually resonates with all Singaporeans, Home, is also a slow song. I personally feel that Joshua Wan has done a great job of capturing what 2020 is for Singapore and Singaporeans, the lyrics is a reminder that because of where we are and who we are - Singaporeans, we can overcome the challenges ahead together. This virus that is testing all our patience has also reminded us that we are a resilient bunch, we are doing a lot better than many countries and that is because of who we are. So thank you to all the front line workers! Thank you for doing what you do, so that we can continue to be safe. Thank you! =)

As a healthcare worker, your song gave us strength and to be kind to each other in these difficult times.

It's not a bad song, just very sad, I guess fits the mood this year. I always used to compare every new NDP song to the past, and criticize the current ones. But I guess we should move on, we can never go back to the past, we have to see the present as it is, and not just dwell on the past. True in life and even in NDP songs. Even if they are not as good in the past, it simply reflects a Singapore that is changing.

I thought it sounded boring at first but lowkey like it now. Better than 2019 imo

Call it sentimental, emotive, lyrical, uplifting, pensive or slow... but the word you're looking for is not "sad". This is actually a refreshing and bold piece as it borrows contraptions used in "pop" music with a clever bassline that dances around the melody (creating interesting chordal progressions), uses many chordal inversions, and even resorts to irregular time signatures. Thus, it breaks all conventions of a traditional "national theme song" often rooted in regular time signatures and predictable melodies. Yet, it is just as "sing-along" friendly. The ending also is special: unlike many other theme songs before it, it does not end on a tonal centre; giving the sense of a song --- or story --- that is unfinished. Like a cliffhanger, it gives hope to a new season.

I like how the lyrics call for a more compassionate and inclusive Singapore where everyone can live their dreams and reach their fullest potential, while also still maintaining our diversity and brilliance. It's undoubtedly a tall order, but setting our sails right (to move in the right direction) is a good start. Kudos to Nathan and the team! May Singapore continue to grow from strength to strength :)

People can never be satisfied. Some said they wanted an original song last year, they got it, and now they're saying that the songs in the past year were better. Slow songs are nice for some people, and might not sound nice to some. Just respect everyone's opinions and don't say that this song is bad and insist that it is a fact. There are people like me, who like these types of slow songs too. Just be glad that they even bothered to do this, if you're so affected by it, please just listen to it at 1.25 speed or leave, no one forced you to listen to this. Stay safe and healthy during this period!
From a random 13 year old from Singapore.

Edit:
Umm hihi I re-read my comment and I think I was a little annoyed when I typed this out. If I offended anyone I'm sorry, what I was trying to say is that it's okay to dislike this song, but it's a little over the top to insist that it's a fact. There are people who like these types of songs, like me, and I highly doubt that there's a song that will satisfy every single person on Earth, so just respect everyone and try not to like, push the "this song is the worst" opinion on everyone's head. (Not talking about you, but I've met many people in my life who insist that this song is bad and it's a fact for everyone.)
Also I made the assumption that no one was forced to listen to this. I am most definitely wrong in this part, but again, if someone forced you to listen to this you wouldn't be here for a second time, because the word "forced" is very strong and will most likely be used if you dislike this song. I will just recommend you to listen to your favourite song instead of annoying yourself by listening to this.

Now, I didn't mean to make this related to age, I have no idea why I revealed my age.

Hopefully this comment didn't offend anyone. Stay safe and healthy!

recently went to NTUC for grocery shopping and the PA system happens to play 'We Are Singapore'. Everyone I walked past either hums or sings it softly. Feels so connected to the song and to all the fellow Singaporean. Simple lyrics, simple tune and it works wonders.

After watching this year’s NDP MV several times, I come to appreciate the messages it tries to convey. I like the song especially the slower tempo and gentleness of the song.

Some people didn’t like this because it was Nathan Hartono that sang this and he’s not a pure Singaporean. But my message to the people who thought that way, what’s the point of out government telling us to be inclusive and anti racists if you act like this. Hartono came out with a beautiful song for all of us and this is how you treat him. Be what you preach!

It's a very nice and heartwarming song, and a good reminder that we can be who we are, because of the unsung heroes we met along the way. To the songwriters and singer, thanks for the job well done! I love it:)!
