Wigan is set to welcome the return of the Lord of the Rings and X-men star Ian Mckellen, The successful stage and screen actor and LGBT activist whom spent part of his childhood growing up in Wigan is returning to the borough to celebrate Wigan Pride 2017 on 12th August 2017. Ian, known for is portrayal as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings, will kick off the celebrations at The Old Courts for an intimate show on Friday 11th August. The star will also be taking part in the first ever Wigan Pride parade on Saturday 12th August followed by a short speech on the main stage before a full day of live entertainment from a range of acts including the return of Leigh band The Lottery Winners, the full line up is available on the Wigan Pride website.

The family friendly and inclusive free event will take part in Wigan Town Centre & Believe Square. This year in addition to the parade, the festival also introduces an autism friendly zone which was a priority for the Wigan Pride organisers to ensure this event is taking the steps to be inclusive to all attendees.

This year also marks 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the U.K. To celebrate, this year a limited edition gold Wigan Pride badge has been released and is available from various places across the borough and online.
