I did that gently when my baby girl was blue and not breathing from SIDS. I went to feed her and found her like this! I said Oh No!!!! Please my Lord!!! Kept massaging her little 3 month old chest. She finally woke up. Scared me to death. I sat up with her for a week. It happened again and I did the same thing the month later. She's now 38😔💕

That's asymmetric tonic neck reflex (ATNR) - Brain stem reflex usually seen in 2 to 4 months babies or due severe injury to brain... Predicts brain has gone primitive state becoz of the injury.

This looks like decorticate posturing. It's sort of a reflex that happens when you're cerebral cortex is no longer functioning. Almost brain dead.

He's winding him up..sternum rub usually requires a PAIN response or reaction clearly in paralytic state..head turn causes sympathetic reaction

When I tried to take my own life, the doctors did this rub so much that my entire chest was bruised, it's definitely not a good feeling

He did not wake up. The sternal rub was not perceived as pain. His brain is effectively not functioning any longer so he has this so-called decorticate posturing reflex.
Sad. The poster really should explain what's going on because of all confused commenters

It does hurt like hell. Every so often doctors have to do that to me because I sometimes don’t respond and stop breathing.

It’s a sternal run used to elicit a response from an unconscious person

Isso dói muito.. eu estava internada na psiquiatria com crises conversivas e durante as crises, eu permanecia consciente. A enfermeira fazia esse reflexo, eu sentia dor, mas não reagia. Muito triste.

This is called a sternal run; hence rubbing the sternum for any signs of life. When the doc turned his head & he reacted to it, it probably is from a spinal injury, not 100% possible, but the chances were that it depends on what happened.
