S+T+ARTS - Cisterns Know- Residency challenges

Показать описание
The Greek island of Sifnos does not have sufficient water supplies to meet demand, and relies on the use of water tankers for maintaining water supply, and on plastic bottles for safe drinking water – at considerable cost. Efficient water resource management requires a full knowledge of existing water resources. However, given that wells, natural water sources and boreholes are private and remain undeclared, official maps are lacking.
Cisterns were the traditional way in which, for centuries, people collected water in the Mediterranean. They also embody the organic way in which humans deal with nature and the way in which communities manage a common good. Values such as good health, clean water, affordable energy and responsible consumption are only some of the SDGs that we address in this Sifnos Challenge.
Responding to this STARTS4Water challenge, Ohi Paizoume| UrbanDig Project hosted artists-in-residence DECA Architecture, who created an interactive art installation designed that consists of two parts. The first part tells the story of water management in Poulati through visual arts on a 3D topography canvas. In the second part, a LED structure gives information about the amount of water available in the network, in interaction with the prototype form of telemetry systems of the Municipality of Sifnos.
The installation was presented in the yard of the Historical, Ethnographic and Folk Museum of Sifnos in Apollonia and was open to the public from July 22nd until September 5th 2022.
