Federal student loans were first offered in 1958 under the National Defense Education Act (NDEA). They were available only to select categories of students, such as those studying engineering, science, or education. The wonderful thing about investing in the S&P 500 is that if a firm begins to dramatically fumble, become unprofitable, and lose market valuation, it will be kicked out and replaced with a better company. All of this happens without your intervention.
