Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. She was an American poet, storyteller, activist, and author. "The first twenty poems show the complete gamut of love, from the initial instant of passionate discovery to the first sense of terrible loss," says Carol Neubauer in Southern Women Writers. From the period of enslavement through the 1960s, "Angelou" focused on the lives of black people in America in other poems. Her themes revolve on racial oppression, the guilt of tolerating too much, and the need for survival and resistance.
