Disaster! Boeing Starliner Costs Twice SpaceX Dragon...NASA Finally.
Starliner is not only a failure in terms of Boeing's reputation but also a significant financial setback for the company. The spacecraft launched many years late and is currently stuck on the International Space Station. Moreover, the project has turned into a financial disaster, with double the spending compared to its competitor, SpaceX's Dragon. This is truly alarming!
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
Disaster! Boeing Starliner Costs Twice SpaceX Dragon...NASA Finally.
When it comes to space exploration, aside from mentioning SpaceX, another topic that frequently comes up is money, even lots of it. This isn't too surprising, given that past space engineering projects have always drained government budgets.
However, to date, public perception of this issue has significantly changed, largely thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of Elon Musk and SpaceX in cost optimization. SpaceX is not only leading the industry but has also become a model for other companies to follow.
Disaster! Boeing Starliner Costs Twice SpaceX Dragon...NASA Finally.
After all, they hope that at some point, space travel will no longer be limited to large corporations, wealthy billionaires, and government agencies, but will also be accessible to ordinary citizens like us.
However, contrary to the majority, there are still some players in the space industry who have not been able to reduce costs but have instead caused them to skyrocket to unacceptable levels. At the top of this list is Boeing and its space programs.
Recently, Boeing announced another financial charge related to the troubled Starliner commercial crew program, raising the company's total loss on Starliner to $1.6 billion. In its quarterly earnings report, Boeing recorded a $125 million loss for the Starliner program, blaming delays in the spacecraft's ongoing Crew Flight Test, the program's first mission to put astronauts into orbit.
This isn't the first time Starliner has caused financial losses for Boeing. The company incurred a $288 million loss on Starliner in 2023, including $257 million in the second quarter of last year after the company postponed the CFT mission to 2024. Since 2016, the total amount the company has lost on this project has reached nearly $1.6 billion, including the newly announced charge on July 31. These losses are primarily due to repeated schedule delays and additional work needed to address the spacecraft's technical issues.

Taxpayers should not have support Boeing's losses just because they can't keep up with spacex.

NASA would be wise to cancel Starliner.

Boeing is totally outclassed in space. They also are having big issues with their airlines production. As a casual observer it seems their future is very dim.

If Boeing can't work with a fixed contract then they need to get out of the space program.

I miss the Space Shuttle, as do many former astronauts.

The longer they wait to admit failure, the dumber they look.

Not only did NASA finally, they even.

I think the U.S. government should gamble on the smaller, new potential competitors of SpaceX and completely give up on Boeing. Clearly the engineers or the managers at Boeing working on space-related projects are incompetent and would only cost the U.S. taxpayer ever more money if NASA continues to bet on Boeing.

A tiny news inflated to a 10 minutes episode.

If this was a cost plus contract it wouldn’t be 1.6 billion but probably 2.6 billion they would have padded the bill for sure!!

Maybe SpaceX should get into the comercial airline business and see if the result is the same as in the space related business.

You miss the point. I climb mountains and like going to space, it is hard and dangerous. If I have a rope with a question if it will hold all our load due to a nick or issue, I don’t test another rope with the same issue, I get a new rope. It’s called common sense.

CEO of Boeing gets $13, 000/hr, that's an expensive employee!

It looks aerodynamicly unsound. I just hope they make it back with all the problems.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Boeing has already said they will never do another NASA contracts unless it’s a cost plus contract. Boeing is going to abandon the Starliner program, it’s just a question of when. It 100% depends on when they figure they have lost too much money. Is it cheaper for them to abandon the program now or after the 6 crewed flights.
