With EU5/Project Caesar coming up on it's year anniversary for its initial dev diaries through the Tinto Talks/Tinto Maps I wanted to make a video discussing the setting for EU5 1337. Why was 1337 selected, what makes it different than the settings for EU4 or EU3 and how will that setting impact gameplay and the countries you can choose. Let me know what you guys think about the info we have gotten on Europa Universalis 5 in the comments below!
P.S: Let's try to get to 8500 subscribers!

Its confirmed that the end date is 1837... So we will get an extra 100 years of playtime

Honestly I like this. As I always felt that colonization began basically immediately after the game started, and an extra century of building up and playing the game without it would be really nice and improve the enjoyment of eventually building a global empire off of what you’ve already done. At least that’s what I think

The New World will be interesting. 1444 allowed for reasonable pre-contact assessments on what was happening before European arrival. Going back another 100 years and that gets much more ambiguous.

The year 2055. The new game, alleged project Romulus, is speculated to be Europa Universalis 7, set between the Dark Ages and WW1, basically uniting CK, EU, and Vic franchises into one

Rumors are circulating that Paradox Interactive intends to create the ultimate game from the beginning of civilization up to the year 2000 by the end of the 21st century

1337 because that makes it even easier for Sweden of course. Otherwise they could have picked another interesting date such as 1356 or 1314 but that wouldn't be as good for Sweden.

This will also be good for megacampaigns as (assuming) the ottomans will be able to conquer the byzantines which they often don’t in ck3

1337 as the starting year is a prime start date for playing as either Hungary or Poland, in my opinion. Poland is currently ruled by King Kazimierz III (the only Polish king to have the epithet of 'the Great') who is only 4 years into his reign. He improved the lives of the peasantry and curtailed the influence of the nobility and the clergy, even his border and trade policies were so intelligent that the Black Death barely affected Poland. Unfortunately though, he did not have any male heirs and prior in 1338 (only a year after the start date, this is DESTINED to have an even in-game) Kazimierz had signed a treaty with the Hungarian King Charles I, who had his claim supported by the Margrave of Moravia in exchange for convincing Kazimierz to not try to reclaim Silesia (again). The treaty stated that if Kazimierz were to die with no male heirs (which happened in 1370), Charles' son Louis would inherit the Polish throne (this did in fact happen) and Kazimierz confirmed the treaty in 1355 in return for aid against Bohemia and the Teutonic Order.

For Poland, this started a chain of events for the next 400 years where the nobility would constantly be vying for control since the very treaty which caused the succession to pass to Louis I was already supported by some Polish nobles. If you were to preserve the Piasts as the ruling dynasty of Poland, Poland could easily remain as a stronger and more independent entity in Mid-Eastern Europe. Opposingly though if as a player you played as Hungary and went for a historical path, you could easily start a historical Golden Age of Hungary (while trying to reform or revert the Golden Bull, which I've heard very poorly affected Hungary in terms of having a strong government).

Personally, I'm gonna be playing as Poland and get Kazimierz to get a son while continuing his great reforms, conquering Ruthenia (which happened historically) and also retaking Silesia and potentially Pomerania as well. Before you ask, yes I've thought about this and planned it multiple times before, my eagerness for EU V can no longer be contained.

It seems a bit too early to have the Jolof Empire on the map.

Its also an interesting time to play in Japan in that time because its the beginning of the northern vs southern court wars and the rise of ashikaga takaouji who later founds the new shogunate that lasts until the sengoku age

So, we now get a game actually giving us that sweet late medieval/renaissance lore we've missed in CK or EU up until now, plus a lot of cool alt-history scenarios, plus even some more Napoleonic content. I love it 🙌🏻

I do fear that this will put even less sensitive to play until the end. Eu4 already had problems with people playing longer than 1700 and we start 80 later than Eu5. I mean they tried to fix late game but they never really achieved it. I really hope they find a way to make it harder to mass plob all over the place xd

With how much Paradox hates Ming, I think they’ll still give a Yuan ruler a title portrait, ignoring Ming again lol

Honestly I feel like this is too early of a start date. I think it should start after the black death

In 1337 Bohemia was ruled by John Luxembourg who along with his entire dynasty had current as well as historically great relations with France, possibly allowing easy alliance if one doesnt historically exist at the start date alredy which Im not sure but is possible since few years later John would die in a battle against english on french side. Bohemia could be junior partner of luxemburg but it will probably be the other way around with Luxembourg being the junior partner instead since Bohemia was where most of John’s power was. He also was a titular king of Poland. The previous king of Bohemia was also briefly king of Hungary and of Poland even though he only ruled for 2 years before he was assasinated. I think because of this Bohemia will be able to almost immidietly declare restoration of union war on both Hungary and Poland. Further more after John Luxembourg Bohemia was taken over by his son Charles IV who was chosen as the next HR emperor in which position he formalised the electoral process for future HR emperors and underwhom it experienced its golden age. In 1373 Charles IV forced ruler of Brandenbourg to abdicate and gave the throne to his son once again giving potential for PU this time by event where it might be done without even going to war. Under his rule Bohemia experienced what is concidered it’s golden age so this year seems like a great start date to play it

As long as we see a 1700 start date for Vicky 4!

i think its entirely for the ERE, with the new systems theyre adding it would be completely impossible to reclaim romes old lands especially with how fucked they were in 1444, and since its such a popular/ mainstream run they straight up picked a date where they are in a state they could actually recover still
