Le Goûter: Afternoon Snack Time in France

Snacking in between meals is considered a faux-pas in #France (quelle horreure)! Le goûter is the only socially acceptable time to #snack.

Here are 4 fun facts about this beloved #French tradition:

1. The name comes from the French verb, "goûter", which means "to taste."

2. It is typically reserved for kids, but adults are known to indulge in this custom as well.

3. It usually happens around 4 o’clock in the afternoon, when children are getting out of school and workers are heading into the last 1-2 hours of work. At this time, children will rush home in a frenzy to get a delicious treat, just enough to satisfy hunger or a craving, but not enough to spoil the appetite for dinner, which usually happens around 8pm.

4. Chocolate croissants (pains au chocolat), little cakes (petits gâteaux), fruit tarts (tartes aux fruits), and applesauce (compote de pommes) are some common goûter snacks.

Do you snack in the afternoon? What's your favorite goûter? 😜
