David Attenborough takes us through the extraordinary trapdoor spider and the ingenious way it takes down its prey.

From David Attenborough's Micro Monsters: Over the course of three episodes, Sir David Attenborough takes viewers deep into the world of bugs. Pioneering macroscopic techniques allow Attenborough to explore in unparalleled detail the intricate, sophisticated behaviours of fascinating creatures and the complexity of the environments they build and inhabit, in a world normally hidden from the human eye. Each of the three episodes explore a different aspect of the little-known lives of insects, from the deceptive defensive mechanisms harboured by spiders and scorpions, to the creation of colonies and how social arrangements develop.

Welcome to Nature Bites the OFFICIAL Nature Hub Channel. Bringing you closer to the remarkable animals that inhabit our natural world.

I love that she tests out the trapdoor every now and then to make sure it works how she wants it to. Amazing.

I can't imagine a more horrifying end from the bug's perspective. Hollywood tries to simulate that but the real thing must be terrible.

Beautiful animals. While there are no Trapdoor Spiders native to the UK, we do have the related purse web spider. This spider makes a burrow with a closed tubular web from the in entrance. When a small invertebrate bumps into the purse web, the spider will rush up and bite through the closed purse from the inside with. its long fangs killing the pray. The spider then cuts a slit in its web and pulls the victim inside. The damage to the web is then repaired before the spider feeds. Its Latin name is Atypus affinis, I have found them on the Chiltern hills. The tubular purse web has around 5cm on the surface and about 10cm underground.

This clip is edited lol - slow down to 0.25 speed at 0:47. Looks like that insect was dropped right at the front door for her.

It’s funny where I live. My manager lets me stay in the bunker just under our block attached to the main housing xD

I wonder what happens when it doesn't know the size of the creature and that creature preys on spiders
