I looked for 'How to pronounce Korean Brands' on YouTube and thought there is not sufficient and effective video, so I decided to make a video pronouncing following brands

- Samsung
- Hyundai
- KIA
- Daewoo
- LG

Hope this helps you to properly pronounce Korean brands when you interact with mostly well mannered Koreans.

A massive smile on my face hearing the correct pronounciation of Hyundai. It's a rare thing to hear. Thank you.

Such a useful video and thanks for sharing your thoughts, but here are time stamps for specific words if needed.

I think part of the issue with Hyundai's pronounciation is that its name has been romanized improperly. It should be Hyeondae, which is much closer if not the same as the Korean pronounciation. Another issue was the fact that in its ads it seems to have used the local pronounciation of the name. Prime examples are the American and British pronounciations, but I'd also like to add the Romanian pronounciation: the first two letters are the same as in Korean, but the "u" is pronounced as "oo" in English, and the final three letters are pronounced as "die" also in English. So in the end it's 1/3 correct, but all ads and dealerships here use this localized pronounciation.

Additionally, when you say to quicken, shorten or simplify, it may be quickening or simplifying for you, within the Korean phoneme set, but each person will have the perspective of “simplifying” into, or within the phoneme set of their native language. Therefore, it is probably ineffective advice to use that terminology if you want to get people to move out of their native phoneme set, in order to pronounce terms as close to Korean as possible. I would recommend telling people to listen and repeat as closely as possible, and leave it at that.

That's great but if I start pronouncing Samsung the right way all my friends are gonna think I'm a pretentious asshole.

“Hyoon-dai” is how they say it in most of the Commonweath, but we do get Hyundai half-right in America. We pronounce the first half as “hun” rather than “heyun” but we do say “day” instead of “dai”. Hyundai even had a Super Bowl ad in 2009 saying that it was pronounced “like Sunday”.

Omg I learnt to read Hangul a week ago and I pronounced all of these perfectly! 😁😁 Korean pronunciation is really simple if you learn Hangul. These Latin alphabets do not really justify the sounds of the Korean language.

When you say “simplify it” it is hilarious, it sounds so much more complicated. Maybe “simple” is a cultural thing. I am Mexican and I’d like you to pronounce “cempzuchitl” as simply as you’d like.

Fun fact: LG stands for Lucky Goldstar and was previously just called Goldstar.

Thankfully now there is an advert on uk TV that tells these...people how to pronounce Hyundai properly. It's been a long time coming. Now my smile is even bigger.

I am literally here after BTS has become the global ambassadors for hyundai palisade. Reading bout the company history & got curious about how koreans pronounce this bc 'dai' wasnt romanized as 'dae' which I am used to see with romanization of hangul. In my country we call it as 'hyoon-da-eee". you really cleared up this for me.

Thank you for making the video :))

Your "common Joe" impression on Hyundai part was spot on!

I find it odd we are attempting to pronounce LG in a proper Korean way. When the letters L and G are both from the English alphabet and essentially stand for the English words Lucky Goldstar.

As a German, I think I at least kind of get what you mean by simplifying it. I can't express exactly how it feels, but in German, unlike many other languages, we pronounce every single letter, we don't leave any out. Like in French you read a word and some letters are completely silent or in english multiple letters turn into one when you pronounce them. So don't think too much about it, if in doubt just pronounce all the letters and there you go (Like PorschE or AUdi, the e isn't silent and the a and u aren't one big letter).

Corrupted pronunciation is cringe, indeed! Good people such as you do a great job of tutoring those strongly desirous of learning. Well demonstrated. Thank you.🙏
