When you care about sustainability, you care about how people and businesses and governments make decisions, today, that will have impacts on the future. Sustainability is the act of thinking long-term. It turns out there is a clear way that such decision-making happens: interest rates. At the end of the day, whatever thing you want—a more environmentally-friendly building; less hydrocarbon-fueled travel; a food system built around long-term health of the planet and its people—involves trade-offs between what we want to have in the future and what we want to eat or wear or do right this minute. That is what interest rates do. You might think interest rates are dull, technical, boring. No! They are the secret key to using our system to rebuild our system and to make it more sustainable.
