Carmelo wanted to play in New York, and he got exposed for being a stat padder instead of a winner. Olympic hero, never excelled in the biggest moments in the nba though.

Most of these guys just refused to adapt to playing off of the ball. Odom just sad. He was married to the Kardashian curse at that time. I hate to admit it, but I watched their show because I wanted to see how Lamar was living off the court. His wife was scheming to get Lamar to talk to his father. Lamar refused because his dad was a money grubbing crack head and Lamar knew it was in his best interest to keep his dad out of his life. He even went on to explain how his grand parents raised him and how his dad was an addict for Lamar's entire life. Khloe wasn't having it and went behind his back, invited Lamar's dad over to the house for dinner against his wishes. It was maybe 6 months later that Lamar is smoking crack with his dad, demanding a trade from the Lakers and his game just fell apart. It was sad to see. This man knew his weaknesses and his pitfalls in life. He did the hard thing to cut his dad out of his life and stay on the straight path, and a manipulative wife who just wanted to look good on camera ruined it for him.

Odom acted outta pure emotion demanding that trade. He thought the Lakers saw him as family after winning 2 titles with them and felt betrayed. If he had a time machine i think he woulda taken the demand back

Odom was smoking crack thats why his stint in the Mavs was disastrous.

Walt "Clyde" Frazier has said repeatedly that he told Melo he needs to average 25 points and 10 rebounds. He never did.

Steve Francis should be on the list as well.

In the 2015 offseason, Joakim Noah went to the Knicks in free agency, but it was technically viewed as a sign-and-trade deal.
Once he went to the Knicks, the production on both ends of the ball dropped severely.
He averaged just 5.0 PPG and 5.2 RPG in his first season with the Knicks.
Injuries began to pile up, and Noah couldn’t even last for 50 games in a season.
Noah would have been much better off in Chicago, where they knew how and where to use him on both sides of the floor.
Instead, his career withered away in one of the worst contracts ever given out in Knicks history.

A couple of these players declined not just because their game declined due to age, but because when they got more help, they were unable to adapt.

With better teammates, your minutes, touches will go down, and the ball will be in your hands less.

Being able to still be effective and efficient in those reduced roles like learning to play off the ball more is vital for team success.

Ginobili was 2x all-star and came off the bench.

I have seen a lot of people talk about many players on this list and for the ones who didn't "adapt" to their new role on the team I believe Kevin Granett said it best about players like Melo, Westbrook, Rondo, Iverson, Dwight Howard.... these are players who's mentally is stronger then the coaches and the people who simply ask them to play a different role. The coaches don't have power on teams, the players have the power if they leave the team looses money. Imagine if a coach told Iverson what past MVP isn't a starter. He would be fired as a coach but now imagine if he couldn't be fired so easy if would force Iverson to work harder to play how he use to or accept the new role.

Westbrook focused more on stat padding more than improving his jump shots

Fun fact, Allen Iverson along with Paul Gasol all the only Hall of Famer who played for the Memphis grizzlies

Klay Thompson comes to mind. I think dude is a shell of himself and will struggle in Dallas. He's too prideful to come off the bench and probably will be out of the league in a few years if he does not turn it around quickly.

it was a shame melo never bothered to play off ball. he would still score a ton, i dont understand the dillema he had there. maybe he wanted to look good when he made it. pretty impressive to still be so good even when thats all you care about

Iverson was successful because he was in a perfect storm in Philly. A team built around him for years

A trade can ruin an NBA career due to either fit or personality. Sometimes it can be both.
