Personally I love how Japanese armor combines high functionality, symbolism from Japanese culture and tradition, and various dimensions of craftmanship, from metalworking to lacquerware and textile related art.


It is a field that connects many different arts and for a noble cause, to protect its user and inspire those around.

The thing that I love about Samurai armor is that it's not only designed artistically and practically; but it's to intimidate the wearer's opponent. Even while on display, it gives off an eerie and ominous feeling. The visor on the top of the helmet was to protect the wearer from downwards strikes along with the purpose of helping keep the sun out of the wearer's eyes. Not only this, the shadow that the visor casts masks the wearer's upper face, leaving only the mask visible. This makes the wearer seem less human as there are less recognizable facial features. Along with this, this iteration of the armor generally makes you appear to be larger than you actually are. Intimidation can play a large factor in fighting. Remember that people in this time period actively believed in demons and vengeful spirits in folklore and that this appearance would make them look like some sort of demon.

My favorite aspect is how the samurai were all trying to one-up each other with their armor and it always took the form of "bigger mustache", "ridiculous head thingy" or both.

Which armor is in your opinion better European (full plate) armor or japanese armor of the same century ?

How do weebs genuinely think a samurai in armor like that is somehow going to match a knight in full plate. A lot of those guys still believe katanas are capable of cutting through steel
