I have a different (and slightly expensive) way of making my wooden floors:

I will choose a very pastel/light shade of brown, and then make a funky shape on the floor with it, usually the shape is a strange triangle...

I then copy this floor and make the color of the top part slightly darker...

And then I wrap that floor around the first.

I then do that previous step over and over again until the room is full.

And if it gets too dark, just reverse.. make the color lighter until you have to make it darker again.

I do this with all of my modern houses and plan to do this with my millionaire mansion soon...

And the reason I said slightly expensive, is because I'm using custom colors the whole time, and normal colors are $5, while custom ones are $10.

Also, if you're worried about the floor underneath looking weird because you colored that too, it actually looks very cool... if you don't like it, then use a pattern like metal, or plastic... or any pattern that doesn't make the chaos obvious.
