No Racial Labels in Schools

Most people agree with the idea that it is time to stop labeling school children by race. To that end, I want my fellow board members in Kansas to consider an initiative to do just that -- to stop the practice of labeling individuals or groups of individuals in Kansan schools by race or ethnicity. It will not be easy.

I don't disagree, per se, but I don't think Brown vs. Board is the best reference to make in advocating for your position. In Kansas at the time, the schools were not mandated segregated by state law, and in Topeka it was only the elementary schools which opted for segregation. Kansas schools were perhaps the only ones in the nation to actually abide by the spirit of the Plessy vs. Ferguson verdict -- and the Justices themselves noted that if the entirety of the argument rested on the Brown vs. Board case*, they would have upheld the law, not overturned it.

*there were three other related cases heard, and in those cases the laws upheld the Separate portion but failed the students with the But Equal portion.

If anything, then, Brown vs. Board actually is in opposition to your goal, as Kansas was doing better at educating the underprivileged prior to the ruling.

I don't know a simple way of reducing SES short of using a time machine to return to rosier days. School Vouchers, perhaps?
