In this video I will show you my copy of Formal Logic by Augustus De Morgan. This book was published in 1847 and is considered a collectors item. Note my copy is very hard to read because of the condition of the book but I tried my best to show some of the pages of this old book. You can find a reprint of the book at the link below.

So glad to see you review a logic book. I think at least a few logic books should be studied alongside math books. Thanks math sorcerer!

The long 's' - that is what the integral sign is based on. An integral is infinite sum. The first letter of sum is s. Make it a long one and you get the integral sign.

I've gotta tell you, MS, that just yesterday I placed an order for a copy of Aristotle's ORGANON which is a unification of six of his works on logic. You see, I have quite a few books in my private math library devoted to logic given its position as a/the foundation of mathematics. And I'm hoping to discover the role that the ORGANON by Aristotle played in the development of ancient mathematics and how that role affected math in the many years to come of mathematical history. I'm really looking forward to this project. Yet, you've given me a splendid notion as to what to add to my collection of historically significant math texts. Thank you lots as always, MS!!!! :) :) :) :)

Omg this is treasure. For some reason seeing these old books is super motivating. U must feel exited to study mathematics while being in your personal library.

well yes that S is now used as the integral symbol due to leibniz if I'm not mistaken ;D

I learned "Formal logic" in my 2nde year math college in France. Very useful and fundamental part of mathematics.

Wow. So, for all of the science people out there, when this book was published:
- Maxwell had not yet graduated high school; no Maxwell's Equations for another decade or two
- No Quantum
- No GR
- They still believed in the aether
- I could be wrong, but I don't think modern thermodynamics was developed

Done!! Just ordered my very own copy of De Morgan's FORMAL LOGIC on AbeBooks in the format of a used softcover edition! Can hardly wait to add it to my collection of historically significant math books!! Thanks again for that book suggestion, MS!! :) :) :) :)

I expect to see a scroll or tablet from Mesopotamia about counting in your next video, MathSorcerer!

There are people that fix old books like this one. Some even have YouTube channels. Doh! I would suggest finding out how much someone that is skilled at book restoration would charge to fix it.

Or is there's any other way to study mathematics in higher studies while doing a work?pls reply sir.

Damn that book is anywhere between 500-1000 dollars. I remember seeing his last name throughout discrete mathematics 😅

Could you solve it in a video ?

I was wondering about the syllogism at 2:24 and I can't seem to prove it, can someone clarify? What if there are no men? Suppose the whole universal population is {Alice}, and Alice is not rational. Then there doesn't exist a rational being that will die, and the conclusion is false (its negation, "every being that dies is not rational", is true).
