What to expect on your day of hernia surgery

Dr. Todd S. Harris describes what to expect on your day of surgery. Patients are asked to stop any blood thinners that they are taking at least 5 days prior to surgery. We require someone to be with patients at the time of their discharge after surgery and encourage them to have someone with them for the first 24 hours post-operatively if possible.

I would say this is a very accurate description. I chose Dr Todd Harris as my surgeon for an inguinal hernia and I just had this done. For my experience it went very smoothly I was told and they wheeled me into the operating room at 7:46am and my they were waking me up calling my wife in at about 8:30am whereupon I got dressed, into a wheelchair and got wheeled out to the car to go home. I was only a little woozy and the ride home went fine and I made it up the stairs and into our condo to begin my recovery.
I chose Dr Harris based on him being a specialist, having years of experience, many good reviews, his informative videos, and by chance he was also close by location wise. I did not shop on price but feel fortunately that they also have reasonably priced options.
This is my 3rd day of recovery and so far so good. This was my first surgery ever. I waited a long time, years until my hernia got worse. I would recommend getting the surgery sooner rather than later. And I recommend Dr Harris as a great choice.

Something not mentioned in this video is that there often is shaving involved in the prep work. Some patients are caught off guard about where and what needs shaved to make sterilizing easier

Just had hernia surgery today first ever procedure of any kind that I had done. ....it went the best as a surgery could possibly go.

The nurses made me feel comfortable in preparation and the surgeon did a great job.

Just wanted to say all you doctors and nurses out there simply don't get enough credit.

You guys are real heros .... Thank you for all you do

Im an 18 year old male and I have a 2cm inguinal hernia with fat as its content. My inguinal hernia surgery is in 2 days. My doctor told me that he’ll do either the laparoscopic or open depending upon me and my parent’s choice, but he said open would be better because it’ll be directly over the hernia and also that the chances of recurrence is lesser in open surgery generally ( open 2% < laparo 4%) . I want to choose the laparoscopic option coz college starts next month for me and I want to recover faster . What should I do ? Pls tell me doc

I have 3 hernias. 😨 One is a flank hernia with my descending colon trying to escape in my side. I'm seeing the surgeon in 2 days. I have to admit, I'm nervous. I really want all 3 fixed at the same time. I was told that I'll be in the hospital for 5 days. 2 of the hernias are getting bigger every day. The only one that doesn't seem bigger is the one that's about 1 1/2" above my belly button. The other hernia is in my back, that one plus the flank hernia are coming through incisions from 2 back surgeries I had 9 months ago.

In your experience, do patients tend to have more post op pain with open or robotic surgery

Dors your center plan to use the robotic approach in the future?

Hi, I'm awaiting surgery for a large incisional hernia. How long could the operation be, how much pain can I expect and how long will I be in hospital for? Still waiting for a date but trying to plan accordingly in the meantime, thanks
