The 1974 U.S. Open has been dubbed the “Massacre at Winged Foot” for good reason, but Hale Irwin’s steely nerve and trusty putter led him to victory in one of the toughest championships in golf history. In partnership with Rolex.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) conducts many of golf's most prestigious championships, highlighted by the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women's Open and the world’s premier amateur championships. Based in Liberty Corner, N.J., the USGA governs the game in the U.S., its territories and Mexico.

A gentleman, a class act is Hale IRWIN. ALWAYS ROOTED for Hale. First time I ever saw Hale was on Shells wonderful world of Golf verses Lanny Watkins. I recall saying to myself he looks like a bookkeeper....later discovered he was a top football player in college. Thanks Hale for all the great monuments you gave us all. 🏆

He's a class act, and a technically great swing which I've always admired.

I got Hale's autograph at a Champion's Tour event in Minnesota quite a few years ago. Very nice guy.

My paternal grandfather died before I was born, but I'd like to believe he was just like Hale Irwin

After that second shot on the 72nd hole, he could finally ex"hale" and declare that his work was done.

It’s a gritty course…the final round is brutal and interesting to watch. Long and windy…for starters. Then the rough….

Runner-up was Forrest Fezler - may he rest in peace. Next to Kermit Zarley, my favorite name in PGA history. Oh, and Gay Brewer.

On the first hole, first round, Tony Jacklin had a 15 footer for a par. He hit the putt beautifully and touched the hole, but missed on the high side. He then had a 30 footer for bogey. I believe he missed it.

A Rotwieller on the links. Great competitor.

Hale was so rude to Mike Donald when he won the playoff at the 1990 U.S. Open at Medinah. He blew right by him as if Mike was not worthy of Hale's presence. Watch the video.
