1959 song that went to # 3 in the US and # 30 in the UK. The song was covered numerous times in the mid-to-late-1960s by well known artists of the day. Fisher was sometimes billed as 'Miss Toni Fisher'.

"Now it begins, now that you're gone.
Needles and pins,
Twilight till dawn."
My favorite line that conveys the concept of total continuous pain and hurt in intensity and duration.

I think it was ahead of its time .... it still has an appeal.

The greatest popular tune about angst, pain and true self pity of its era. The “phasing” adds a sense of foreboding. It's a masterpiece.

I might have first heard this when I was 5, in Fort Knox, Kentucky, on a jukebox at the Non
Commissioned Officers club on the jukebox. The bass stuck in my head for years. I remember that's where I heard "The Happy Organ". Think about speeding down a highway in a new '59 Buick with that playing.

I was 9 or 10 and the echo chamber blew my mind. Memorable tune; well sung by Toni Fisher.

I remember dancing to this song with a young woman I worked with in the 1980s. I was a VERY 'late bloomer'.... shy and awkward. She was kind and in trying to get me 'out of my shell' would haul me out to these oldies clubs with her girl friends on the weekends.

I stumbled upon this song by accident. I am married 30 years now and all but forgotten about those days.

I went to your YouTube channel and subscribed because I found a lot of wonderful songs that I look forward to listening to.

It is the holiday season and I hope and pray that you and all here enjoy God's Blessings of Peace, provision, and Joy.

Great song.
"The Big Hurt" was the first commercial recording to feature a technique (or effect) now known as flanging. This "jet plane-like" sound effect may also be familiar to those who have listened to long-distance shortwave radio music broadcasts. (In radio, this effect was the result of multipath interference and varying propagation times.) To some, the flanging effect made this record sound like a distant shortwave broadcast.
