The cameraman deserves some love here. When television was in it’s infancy, that is amazing camera work, to get the shot that clear from behind the plate.

I was close to 8 years old that day...knew little about MLB then....but my dad had some Amer.Legion buddies at the house, apparently watching Game One...and they started hooting and hollering about something in the next room and I asked what happened and THAT's how I learned who Willie was and what he had just done. I idolized him from that point on, wearing number 8 (Yogi) or 24 (Willie) in every Little League, Babe Ruth League, HS, College, Legion and semi pro league I was ever in. On 8/22/68 when I signed professionally with what would be the new San Diego 1969 Padres entry into the NL, I kept thinking, "Willie, I'm not worth it!" Four years later (after the Army and Vietnam) I attended their Spring Training, but not having played 3 years I was rusty and was released soon after...didn't matter....it was just something else I had in common with my idols, having gone just a little on the same road they traveled themselves. I felt very fulfilled at the thought.

Happy 90th, Willie! Arguably, the greatest to have EVER played the game.

Every Ballplayer of my generation practiced making "The Catch" in their backyard. In my 60's it is still amazing to see. RIP Mr. Mays❤️

I umpired on two occasions at Willie Mays Field in Fairfield Alabama.. Walked in the same field, the same batters box walked in the outfield. Surreal! In the same year just down the road in at historic Rickwood Field also where Willie played as well as all the greats who played there.. What an honor. Worked 20-30 games there..never went back to Fairfield.. Willie Mays was one of my boyhood heroes. He had recently stated that he could not come to the game being played there this Thursday night at Rickwood Field. Willie said that he would follow the game from his home in the Bay Area. That he hoped the kids would enjoy it and be inspired by it. Mays was one of the most humble men not just a humble former player but just plain humble and greatful. RIP Willie!

I had to come back to put this in. But I can’t tell you how inspirational it was for me to be able to walk the same grounds. Just can’t put into words how that helped shape me as a person. Every time when one of the greats and he was right there at the top. Passes on.. it’s a reflection for me to what can I do to be a better father, a better individual… be a part of the solution. Made me care about people in general…It was an honor and I’m with Willie on hoping that this game on ESPN this Thursday that others will tune in and be inspired by this game. Chest bump and finger pointed skyward. Now I will go mourn..

My favorite player when growing up in the sixties. They don't make em like that anymore. I'll admit, watching that catch again brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for being you, Willie Mays.

My Dad was there when he was a teenager and drove with 5 friends (nonstop) from Northern Ontario Canada to New York City, US and it was a 15 hour drive-one way and said it was worth going just to see this catch.
My Dad was most likely waiting for Willie Mays at the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven.
I miss my Dad and my condolences go to Mr. May's family, loved-ones, friends and fans all over the World.

Willie Mays --- one of the all time greats ever to play baseball. He could do it all: hit for power, hit for average, steal bases, great fielder and oh so fast. You can't really appreciate his catch in this video without appreciating the ground Willie covered in tracking it down. That centerfield fence was 483 feet from home plate, and that ball he caught would have been a homerun in every single current major league park. RIP, Willie! You were a delight to watch!

The fact that he wheeled and threw the ball back to second seemlessly makes that the most incredible play ever!

RIP Willie Mays. That’s an amazing iconic catch!

I think, too, what makes this so iconic is the optics of that high gray wall and the cavern next to it. It looks like he's running into a kind of forever field--which he kinda was.
