How to Whittle a Simple Bear- Step By Step Beginner Wood Carving Project

In this step-by-step whittling guide, I will show you how to carve a simple little bear out of a block of wood! This is a perfect project for someone new to whittling and want an easy sculpture to start their carving adventure.

What you will need:
1" x 1" x 2.5" block of basswood (2.5 cm x 2.5cm x 6.35cm)
Your preferred whittling knife (sharpened)
Pencil
Protective gloves and/or finger guards

I am new to carving, approx 3 weeks. But today was my first serious attempt.
This morning I carved a bear, following you step by step. I love the pause button.
My daughter and my wife all loved my bear, and were surprised how I caught on.
I struggled at times carving off too much basswood, and splintering the wood. But I worked around my mistakes and the result is acceptable. At least to me, and the girls.
I am going thru an extended illness, and I’ve discovered this new hobby is great therapy.

I just finished whittling my very first … thing, and it was Doug’s bear. Doug is great and I managed to get it to look pretty good, but your video is WAY easier to follow. Your focus and steadiness makes it so very easy to see what you are actually doing. And thank you for the left panel with a still pic of where we are now — what an effective way to allow the noobs to gain some attention detailed instructions until we feel more confident.

your not just teaching whittleing you also teach kind of a philosophy. It´s okay when its not perfect. Today I tried a Fox free Hand and the Tail was Waaaay to short. But I made a Snake out of it at the end. Maybe its better to make a sketch at first and draw some lines xD
