"In 1883, Emma Lazarus was asked to write a poem as part of an effort to raise money to build a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. In composing “The New Colossus,” she drew inspiration from her work with Jewish immigrants. This is truly a beautiful and touching gift to the United States of America from a distant webmaster so far away in Australia! Thank you, Doug, for portraying the plight of so many immigrants who risked their lives to begin anew in a far away land with scant belongings in the early 1900's. It was so fitting that Neil's grandmother, Molly Rapaport was highlighted at 3:01 (age 12).
