Pretty much all of these themes are sad but I really love how they all manage to be uniquely sad in a way that fits each character they represent.

Riku’s theme feels determined but regretful. Aqua’s theme is ethereal and tragic, almost exhausting in its sorrow. Ventus’ theme is soft and melancholy with just a slight twinge of hope. Namine’s theme is beautiful but has an air of loneliness about it. Kairi’s theme is like a sweet, somber nostalgia. Roxas’ theme feels mournful, like a quiet cry of sadness. and Xion’s theme is just straight up pain 😭

What I love about Rikus theme is that the melody sounds like it's building up higher and higher yet it eventually falls into a lower pitch almost as if it's falling to the dark

I know that feeling for first place. I can’t put my finger on it, but I feel like Roxas fought a giant robot looking thing that looked like a mix of Sora and the Megaman Models in ZX. Oh well

It's wild how I never noticed Roxas' theme in Aqua's and Ventus'. Also that last one is definitely my favorite. Would've been so cool if they made a tragic boss theme version of that last one.

Absolutely love Naminè’s theme and it’s the best part of Chain of Memories for me, my second favorite is probably Roxas especially when it plays when his Summer Vacation is over and when you fight him, it really sets the mood and tone of the fight too.

Most of the songs in MoM use the original PS2 sound font for the themes that were introduced on that platform, so Sora's, Kairi's and Roxas' themes are all in midi which is more synthesized compared to the orchestra do-over from the PS3/PS4 versions. It was a big turn off for the game in a lot of people's eyes bc some songs got essentially overhauled thanks to being played on an actual orchestra. Same could probably be said of the other ones aside from the BBS trio themes, as the PSP was fully capable of full orchestra so they already started out good sounding.
TLDR go listen to Roxas' theme from the 1.5/2.5 version it's prob what you're looking for

Roxas’ theme at 5 really shocked me, thought it’d be number 1 for sure. But I get what you mean by your description of it. By any chance, do you think you’re confusing Roxas’ theme with the OTHER KH2 song “The Other Promise”? Basically a Roxas Theme reprise, it’s the one they play during the KH2FM battle between Sora and Roxas. I didn’t know they were 2 distinct songs until I got the KH Symphony track. Could explain why you thought it felt different?

If you haven't you should listen to Lizz Robinett's versions of these themes. They all have very good and well thought out lyrics, and this is coming from someone who doesn't listen to her.
