This video and channel demystifies the indie game. You’re one of the only people laying out facts and figures! Many Many Thanks!

That's some great advice and inspiring too. I appreciate that you dish out the honest facts about making independent movies, especially the truths regarding distribution. If you taught a class in film at University for film majors (like I was in the long, long ago) your class would be the best. Unfortunately schools do not educate film students in the realities of filmmaking today and are mostly bogged down in history and theory with some poorly taught production fun to just give a taste. Making movies that make money means it's a business and the movie is the product. This is one of the hardest lessons to put into practice after all the education is complete and you have this degree in your hands. The landscape is tough to navigate. Thanks for the direction.

This is all good insight for folks with indie films. I'm just at the release side of a feature that ran through a sales agent that would only make deals with MGs (in the territory you said) after my previous film being initially self-distributed then finding its way to what could arguably be called a predatory distributor. The new film was also nearly associated with a sales agent who found me, made a very impressive pitch and came from a background with very recognisable names, who finished off a very complimentary and wooing hour long call with the rub; that you paid THEM up front in 3 stages for the pleasure to have them sell you. I don't know if there's an easy way to figure out the good and bad sales agents beyond word of mouth, but given that there is more and more predatory ones popping up day to day and convincing folks with small films that might not be noticed by a more legit distributor, it's something we all need to find a way to identify and help each other avoid.

After watching so many videos on this topic I’ve made the decision to just release on YouTube after our film festival run. Having control when I release is important to me

20 to 40%? i'll keep that in mind! i hope i finish my film by the end of march. one of my challenges is a cast that is simultaneously available. we can only film when we can.

4:54 - Movie poster making costs. That got my attention. Do you have a video that talks about this process/costs/deliverables?
Great video! Thank you for sharing.

Great advice ! and Avoid High Octane Pictures and Galen Christy. They have burned countless indie filmmakers :(

Great advice as always, J. Thanks! The production value of your videos is looking really professional too. Just curious, what are you using for your audio setup? The sound quality is impressive.

Which distributors are offering the MG? Or is it just rumors?

Do you have advice on affordable Entertainment Lawyers to handle these contracts? Also, if you use SAG actors, how you do handle their residuals? I'm going to be shooting a feature with SAG actors and I'm trying to navigate that part.
