Unmentioned is that the massive torque & locking apparatus designed specifically to stay in place is plainly visible & inspections both daily & pre-flight, insures THAT’s not really a possibility even in the most extreme flight conditions. Speaking as a helo mechanic for the USMC & later as an A&P certificate holding mechanic. Flight Safety is Paramount!! Semper Fi, carry on!

I was a Huey crew chief
The story we all heard at Fort Rucker ( that's where we learned to fix UH-1H models) was: The crew chief would have an extra one hidden from a rookie pilot and when they were still on the ground--- he'd throw it out where the Rookie could clearly see it--- then we all would hear him yell " JESUS!"
I never did it but we all knew the tale. God bless all of you and remember Jesus Saves!

As a former Chinook Crew Chief, I can say it’s even more concerning when you have 2 rotor heads 😯

Guess, you're pretty "Fortunate Son" since your Huey landed safely.

One thing I always found funny is that on some bombardier tri rotor helicopters there's not one Jesus nut but 12 bolts, 4 bolts on each blade that they call the 12 apostles to keep with the theme

As a turboprop is nothing but a straightforward turboshaft engine, a lot of props also have a Jesus nut. They get checked for breakaway torque at perscribed maintenance intervals.

My uncle flew Huey’s in Vietnam, and he was flying at 200ft when his tail rotors chain slipped or something, and the helicopter spun til crashed into the ground, breaking my uncles back. The army of course didn’t heal him right, so he hasn’t been able to walk unassisted since.

I was the mechanic on a flight of a SH-2F sea sprite from NAS Norfolk to the the bone yard in Arizona and at the half way point when we stopped for the night I was doing my inspection and found the Jesus nut broke the torque stripe and the safety wire so I remarked it and safety wired the shit out of it as the squadron told me to fix it with what I have. Fun times

A few years back we had a Sikorsky 76 Mk II in medivac configuration crash a few minutes after takeoff because this "Jesus nut" failed and the main rotor detached. The helicopter was at approximately 600 feet agl traveling close to 160 knots. We lost 3 fine people that day.

So we had
JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL

Now we have
JESUS HOLD THE NUT

My uncle had the drive shaft snap when he was flying. Fell 400 feet into the side of the mountain. Miraculously survived with his back broken in multiple places and some how rad down the other side of the mountain to camp. Was told he would never walk again and if you looked at him today you would never know it happened.

The helo mechs always told me it was from when you have to install it at such a ridiculously high torque value that the standard expression when it finally clicks is “Jesus!”

Are they threaded backwards or in such a way that they tighten themselves as the rotors spin?
That would make sense… right?

Fun helicopter fact! In the Vietnam war half of US helicopters deployed were shot down, and a large portion of pilots were killed. Aside from benefits in geography, we kept sending more because LBJ and his wife were some of the biggest stockholders in Bell Helicopters’ parent company, and made HUGE profits off the war.

The Jesus nut is called the jesus nut, because its the point at which all faith is put, when many components come together held by one nut, nothing to do with praying.
