What Are Jumping Worms And Do You Have Them?

I find these creatures vile and disgusting and I know I’m not alone. They are an invasive species from Asia and people call them jumping worms, snake worms and crazy worms. They change and degrade the structure of the soil, hogging nutrients and spreading rapidly. Ultimately, they degrade the quality of the soil, and create erosion, impact native plants, and what is available for wildlife to eat and shelter in, and therefore affect the entire surrounding ecosystem.

They move fast and are longer than regular worms, and they have the white band around them which is called a clitellum.

Many people have mentioned these to me and asked for advice. I’m no expert on this but here’s what I have learned:
1. You can bring these into your yard unknowingly by sharing plants, moving plants around in your garden, using contaminated tools (with their eggs on them).
2. They are difficult to detect because the eggs can travel and then hatch. If you see little piles of what look like coffee grounds, you may have them.
3. They are difficult to eradicate. You may need to hand-pick them out and you should toss them in soapy water to kill them.
4. They like rich, acidic soil. Some people have suggested amending with lime.
5. I have also heard of people getting them from a delivery of mulch, or even compost. I have no idea how to prevent this from happening.

I hope that people who know more about them will share any encouraging information you may have about how to contain and eradicate them.

If anyone is interested in their scientific name I believe there are two species in particular: Amynthas tokioensi and Amynthas agrestis. We have some at our cottage in New Hampshire, which is where this video of one comes from.
