Short fibre reinforced injection moulded thermoplastics offer a very useful compromise between cost and performance, and are increasingly being used in structural components. However, as with any material system, the advantages of these materials cannot be fully exploited without a means of evaluating their durability at the design stage. Without such evaluation, there is a high risk of producing parts with unquantified safety factors, resulting in premature failures or overdesign. In this video, we will describe some recent developments in fatigue modelling of these materials, including the handling of their inhomogeneity and anisotropy. We will also examine some of the challenges in interpreting material characterisation tests and show the latest capabilities in nCode DesignLife.
