Fire Safety with Survival Instructor Dan Wowak
Enjoying the outdoors means being a steward of the outdoors. With that, fire safety and prevention is of the utmost importance. With an endless number of outdoor activities to partake in, many of these activities incorporate the enjoyment of a campfire – from ending a long hike to relaxing and enjoying a few beers with friends. They spread joy and warmth to every occasion. Campfires though can also bring tragedy and loss if not correctly and responsibly taken care of.

Following a few simple steps can quickly and easily diminish the chances of causing any forest fire.

So I MESSED UP yesterday and if it weren’t for a spontaneous rain today, I might have been in jail. I was burning some piles of pine straw on top of an old burn pile near our woods. I was sure I extinguished it yesterday but after a heavy hour rain today, I saw fire going again! I’m on standby with the water hose just spraying for as long as it takes. My heart stopped so I’m getting some education (hopefully). I’m over here sweating and so glad it rained today but now I won’t be able to go to bed, just gonna have to keep checking on it all evening/night.

0:00 Introduction
0:33 STEP 1: Do not build a campfire if the area prohibits campfires.

1:15 Wood: Clear the area.
1:21 Water: Be close to a water source.
1:31 Widow-makers: Watch out for widow-makers.
1:47 Wind: Make sure the area is protected from wind.

2:00 STEP 3: A campfire ring or pit is also important.
2:03 Campfire ring
2:22 Campfire pit
2:39 Stay away from roots.
2:48 Cover over.
2:54 STEP 5: It’s time to start the campfire!
3:02 Never use gas, aerosols or flammable liquids.
3:09 STEP 6: Extinguish the fire properly by pouring ample amounts of water over the fire pit.
3:28 Never just flip dirt over.
3:47 If there's heat, you cannot walk away.
3:51 STEP 7: Enjoy!

thanks for making this. I once asked about fire safety tips in the comments of someone else's video on how to make a fire in the rain. Another user sinply commented back "common sense?!". Having experienced house fires as a kid and now living in western canada where we get hammered by forest fires every summer, I must thank you for this. Ground fires are definitely not what I would consider using simply my common sense. Thanks so much!

Great video. my rule is simple always know how to put out your fire before lighting one, I have a foldable bucket that makes a great fire extinguisher and I always teach if you can't out your hand in it its not stone cold, . soak it stir it and soak it many times over, , and a simple saying I like is you can make a million matches out of one tree but it only takes one match to destroy a forest. great video nicely done.

I have yet to find a spot in the forest that didn't have roots and I noticed that you left a good sized one intact...in your fire pit? What's the best way to ensure that nothing under your fire is going to ignite?

You should force all the guys making videos on fire starters and kindling to watch this.
They go into the woods and just build a fire next to a big log, on the ground on dried leaves!

Should throw in a warning about what rocks you use to make a ring, some can explode potentially.

In a survival situation will you really waste water to put out a fire? Or what if you have no water?
