I have huge respect for your courage, honesty and transparency. Sincere thanks for selflessly giving us the opportunity to learn from your experiences.

Erik, This is great. Whilst frustrating for you, it is so good that you take us through this (painful) journey with you. I think I agree that having only one sheet is one less thing to get tangled up, and its more controlled to furl (or dowse in our case) before gybing unless its really calm conditions. We're always nervous getting our cruising shute out (with snuffer sock type arrangement) but I'd never dare do it single handed! Love your videos - so good when I haven't time to get out there myself!

Generally we don’t shackles on sheets of soft sails. We either tie a bowline or use a soft shackle with tape. Hope that helps

With you Brother, things are seldom REALLY out of control. You are one of my favourite lecturers at the YouTube Sailing Academy. Thank you.

Yikes! What we sailors call a moment of truth ...

I'd say wear some gloves, but I'm guessing a Norwegian Sea sailor has a quarter inch of callouses on his hands.

We had similar issues with our gennaker not furling properly. We have the same setup as you have. It was solved when we tightened the gennaker halyard as tight as possible. We fly it like that. Not like a spinnaker with a looser halyard. Since then furls nicely every time. Like you, we always use only one sheet and no metal shackles. Fair winds!! Abel and Adrienne S/V Camus Bosta

Even bowline can untie that is a known fact. For situations where you need to really rely on the knot like towing a dinghy or tying to clew in rough weather I would tie a figure of eight, pass the tail through the clew, then trace the figure of eight just like climbers do for their harness.

Always having a turn or two on the winch is the first thing I teach to the spi trimmer noobs onboard 😅

One of my „virtual sailing masters“ and he makes mistakes, and he shows his mistakes so we all can learn from that. …while producing other mishaps😆 Thank‘s for that, now get that sail of the rigg! 😁👍🏻

and you still only put one wrap on the drum....brah, also get self tailing winches or devices, they're perfect for single handers...if you never used them, they'll change your life.

I'm always messing up lol. I think things go wrong for everyone sailing.

I'm actually happy to see an experience sailor have a difficult time. (Not for you) But I seem to do something stupid on the regular sailing my tiny US yacht 18. I'm just happy to know it's not only me lol

Nice to share, but again something is going to go badly wrong if not more careful. Bravado only works when you get to laugh it off, not always the case..

I have a life hack in this situation. If you hold the line tighter in your hand, it cant slip ;)

I've hadreal sheetburn (gennacker), it's really painful and you can't just carry on.
I know it's p=ssy but wear gloves especially if you're solo.

Forget roller reefing, use a snuffer.

Most people do not understand the loads that are on those lines. Can be thousands of pounds.

Have you considered a sock instead of a furler. Class 40 and imocas solo sailors use them, surely they make more sense. Furlers always seem to be an issue on assym spinnakers
