This kitchen risk awareness video shows common hazards chefs, cooks, and kitchen hands should be aware of when they’re required to lift heavy objects at work. Watch manual handling safety tips and examples of safe handling procedures, including first-hand experience from chefs.

What are 11 safe lifting tips?

1. Get close to the object and test the weight.
2. Bend your knees with a neutral back posture.
3. Get a good grip.
4. Pivot with your feet and don't twist your back.
5. Lift the object smoothly and slowly, keeping it close to your body.
6. Empty garbage containers before they become completely full.
7. Organize the kitchen so heavy items are stored at waist level.
8. Keep the load between your knees and shoulders.
9. Use dollies or carts whenever possible.
10. Get help from others when lifting a heavy load.
11. Avoid lifting or carrying items that are slippery, too hot, or unevenly balanced.

Most people (employers) in any field of work would underestimate how important this is! One unexpected strain could cost the employer thousands if not more. Training and education is key!
