In the book, he examined the “Bush doctrine” and its implications. In particular, he addressed the Bush administration’s space policy and overall efforts to expand U.S. influence and power. He also talked about the case of British whistleblower Katherine Gun, who leaked a memo stating that the NSA had been spying on UN Security Council members; and the charges against the Cuban Five, who were convicted of espionage in 2001. Following prepared remarks, Mr. Chomsky was presented with the Award of Excellence by the society. He then responded to questions from members of the audience.

Hindsight is 20/20 and we know now the US wasn't worried about WMD's or bringing democracy in Iraq, Iran, Syria, or Afghanistan. They lied and it's far more beneficial for them to gain control over resources and the land than to actually take physical possession of the resources. Using bases, boarders, embargos, sanctions and tarrefs the US controls many countries until they agree to what the United States wants!
For those of you who claim the US doesn't have bases and possession/ownership of oil fields, Poppy Fields and other precious materials (Uranium, Cobalt, Diamonds, Gold, Silicone mines)

They don't need possession, they effectively control where it goes, who gets it and can even manipulate trade to make it worthless unless the US gets what it wants in forced agreements.
