AF w/ shutter needs to be set to ON.

My a6500 was already on, but I turned it off, turned the camera off and turned it back on and selected on again and bingo it worked. Thank you very much for the tip.

This has worked for me. Thanks. Although I have to stress, I did not actively change this particular setting. I do get the feeling though, that using the hotshoe (flash remote) tends to screw up the camera settings, which is a bummer.
