About this course
An introduction to programming using Scratch, a visual programming language via which aspiring programmers can write code by dragging and dropping graphical blocks (that resemble puzzle pieces) instead of typing out text. Used at the start of Harvard College's introductory course in computer science, CS50, Scratch was designed at MIT's Media Lab, empowering students with no prior programming experience to design their own animations, games, interactive art, and stories. Using Scratch, this course introduces students to fundamentals of programming, found not only in Scratch itself but in traditional text-based languages (like Java and Python) as well. Topics include: functions, which are instructions that perform tasks; return values, which are results that functions provide; conditions, via which programs can decide whether or not to perform some action; loops, via which programs can take action again and again; variables, via which programs can remember information; and more. Ultimately, this course prepares students for subsequent courses in programming.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

This video is an introduction to programming with Scratch, a visual block-based programming language developed by MIT's Media Lab.
Scratch allows you to create visual stories, animations, games, and more by assembling blocks in a sequence.
Sprites in Scratch are objects that exist on the stage and are programmable.
Sprites have x and y coordinates, and you can change their position by dragging them or adjusting values.
You can rename sprites, show or hide them, change their size, and adjust their direction.
You can create new sprites by choosing from various categories or drawing your own.
Sprites can have multiple costumes, allowing you to change their appearance.
You can add sounds to sprites, including built-in sounds or your own recordings.
The backdrop of the stage can be changed to different images or drawn/painted by you.
You can remove a sprite by selecting it and taking appropriate action.
You can remove a sprite from the stage by selecting it and clicking the Trash icon.
You can change the direction of a sprite using the direction control, but it may become upside down when rotating.
Scratch provides rotation styles, like "Left and Right, " to control the sprite's orientation, preventing it from going upside down.
You can view your stage in full-screen mode by clicking the full-screen icon in the upper right corner.
Projects in Scratch can be saved to your computer or on Scratch's website if you have an account, allowing you to share them with others.
The next step is to program the sprites and the stage using blocks to create interactive stories, games, and animations.
