In this episode, we spend a day in the historic port city of Messina, Sicily! We try to track down a deep-fried mozzarella sandwich called a Rustici - but will we find it?? We climb to the top of the clock tower which houses the biggest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world, and hit the city streets to discover what this Sicilian city has to offer!

Messina is known as the door of Sicily and a crucial port and gateway to the Mediterranean sea and Italy. It is the 3rd largest city in Sicily and a cruise port in the province of Messina, Italy. Devastated by major earthquakes as well as bombings in World War 2, Messina is an ancient city with a very modern touch, as most of the buildings and structures have been rebuilt in the last 100 years.

"Rustici" usually refers to some street food that you can find in a rosticceria or panetteria. It is a generic term for that kind of food. What you were looking for is called "mozzarella in carrozza" (lit. mozzarella in a wagon")

Thank you for being in our beautiful town (I am from Messina). Some people use to think that we have not much; instead I can surely say that my town is a quite nice place. I also hope that citizens were friendly as they always are (that is one of the reasons why Sicilian people are famous in all the world).
I hope you would come back again if you can.
Although you didn't eat our tipical "Mozzarella in carrozza" (what you called "fried mozzarella"), I hope you enjoyed our city and, as a matter of fact, I am sorry you couldn't visit more places and monuments...we really have a quite number of it in our city.
Nice video anf Thank you again :)
Fabio.

I discovered your travels through Italy during Covid lock down. They are such a great escape when we are stuck at home. I have been to Messina and the clock is absolutely amazing, considering it's age and the mechanics in it's build. I especially love it when it plays Ave Maria and the little church rises. I love the animals and the rooster that rotate. My grandfather used to talk about that clock so we made sure we went to see it when we went to Italy. Keep up your great travels and enjoy. I was born in Messina, I’ve lived ther for 21 years. Rustici is a category of street food: arancini, mozzarella in carrozza (the deep fried mozzarella sandwich), san daniele, cartocciata, pizzette, pidoni and focaccia are all rustici.

When I was in the Navy I visited this city, I met a girl named Graciella Cambria (Brunette) and her friend Anna. I had a good time getting to know them, me and Graciella really hit it off, that was back in 1989. To this day I still remember her. I remember one night I walked her home walking up those hills, we said good bye and then I could not remember how to get back to my ship, it was midnight and it started raining, I had to look for water to get my bearings and ran back to my ship. Beautiful city, I plan to visit again.

Hello I'm from Messina, you should have also gone to Torre Faro and Ganzirri which are two beautiful districts of Messina in front of the sea, there are there also two lakes and a wonderful nature reserve.
Congratulations for the video, you are very nice

Damn you two! Whenever I went into a bakery in Italy last time I was there, I would ask "Avete qualcosa con ricotta?" and always was given something delicious. I happened to watch your latest video first, dessert overload, and now I'm starting at the beginning and will follow your road trip. As if I don't have enough YouTube to watch and am always trying to lose weight - maledetto!
