📜 History of D-Day, The Great Crusade, Part 1
D-Day: June 6, 1944, the day when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to retake France from the Germans. They hoped to take the Germans by surprise, and their decision to brave rough weather to make their landings certainly accomplished that, but despite these small advantages, the American forces at Utah and Omaha Beach had to overcome monumental challenges to establish a successful beachhead.

One of my favorite D-Day stories is how the USS Texas flooded some of its compartments to create an angle, and this allowed the ship to fire farther inland and support the troops longer

That one general who re-routed the whole Utah beach plan was an absolute genius, I’ll tell you that much.

Just a note: Not convinced then-Brigadier General Cota would be thrilled at not being considered a general who landed as part of the invasion force. His actions at Omaha earned him a DSC, and he was personally part of the first successful breaching team.

With a dad like Teddy Roosevelt, how can you not end up being a badass?

Hey I know that plane! My great grandfather was on the pathfinder plane that overshot its target. He ended up wandering around the wrong part of France for a while and got injured by a grenade in a fire fight with some retreating Germans. They took him to building that was being used a field hospital, but the building got hit by allied artillery. He accidentally got shelled by his own side!
He only survived because he and the other allied prisoners were being kept in the basement. eventually he was found by troops who had landed on the beaches a few days earlier and got sent home. He learned how to drive a tractor with a few less fingers and only died a few years ago in his mid 80's.

To commemorate D-Day, we're taking the next four weeks to explore its history from the perspectives of four different nations. First up: the United States!

Oh boy, I'm hoping to see a kilt, a bagpipe, a longbow, or a claymore in the next episode

My great grandfather was part of the second wave. He met his wife, an english widow whose previous husband died in the war, while waiting to be deployed on D-day. Thank you Extra History.
