Back before I had a cell phone, I used to meet my boyfriend after school. I was one grade below him and was still in middle school while he went to high school, which was on the opposite side of a city park from where I was. Since there was this age gap, my parents didn’t want me to see him. Even though we were super close in age, I was in middle school and he was in high school, so of course my parents rightfully thought it was a little weird. But this kid was my first love, my high school sweetheart. We went on to be together from age 13 until I was 18. It was the sweetest, most innocent love.
Since my school got out 20 minutes before his, I’d run through the park and try to catch him at the stop light. I remember times where he would be crossing at the same time as me. We wouldn’t be allowed to stop and hang out, we could only give each other a quick kiss and hug and then I’d have to continue on home. So some days, as we’d cross the street, he would hand me a paper or two. Poems. This kid wrote me poems for daaayyyyss… he also made little cartoon character versions of us and would draw comics with them in it. I still have so many of the poems memorized. They were so silly, but they really meant so much to me. More than any text, more than any video call, more than anything any man could give me a decade later as I sit here writing this. No one ever touched my heart through the internet or through text like that boy did on that cross walk every day when he’d hand me a poem, give me a kiss, and disappear until tomorrow.

Edit: I wanted to include the first ever poem he gave me, that I still have memorized 11 years later. Be warned, it’s very silly and cringe af… but it is so freakin cute lmfao.
