I'm white, but I had a black coworker who was incredibly self-conscious about her natural hair. She talked to me about it, and how she wanted to stop doing treatments/wearing hair pieces like weave because her hair was thinning. She started wearing it natural and letting it grow out, and because she had confided in me, I made it a point to compliment her hair as naturally as I could when I saw her. We weren't super close or anything, but I was glad she was able to process through this kind of trauma and ultimately she wound up wearing her hair natural permanently. She looked amazing, too, her natural hair was just... better.
