Very easy to get over 400hp out of a 5.3 with a mild cam at 6600rpm with a bigger cam and worked heads close to 500 at 7200rpm my friends mustang has a 570 lift cam with 226 duration it idles good with a slight chop even my monte carlo with 236 duration on 112 lobe separation idles decent with only a slight chop

Good luck. I'm thinking Vega for the 5.3 I have. To many projects.

With a buick GN 8.5 rearend or better drag radials and suspension mods drag spring front and back rear lift bars to plant the tires should easley go 12s to high 11s l have a 1984 Monte Carlo SS with a 6.0 with CNC ported LS3 heads 600 lift hydraulic roller cam and a holley 850hp carb on a GM single plane intake with 1 7/8 longtube headers 540hp at crank pulls very hard 3500RPM to 7200rpm with mods mentioned above it's best quarter mile was 10.97 at 122mph but will run 11.0 to 11.3s all day long and drive it home from the track with a 3000rpm lockup torque converter and 700r4 trans with a buick GN 8.5 rearend with 4.10 gears car has power steering and brakes no A/C when you get it finished it will be fast reliable and alot of fun but l don't think the 7.5 rearend will last long with sticky tires l broke my 7.5 long ago when car was power by a 400hp 350ci my friend has a 1988 mustang with a 5.3 engine 440hp at crank on motor with mods and a 200 hit of nitrous that has gone 9.98 at 138mph with coil over suspension and a power glide trans with a 4000rpm torque converter with 3.73 gears car runs low 11s at 120mph on motor weighs 2930 with him in it if you set it up right your going to be very happy with it
