To me it looks like a badger set, they can be musky smelling. This said I am in the uk you have more crazy critters than us x

Could definitely be a badger, be careful around those, as they are dangerous. They do try to avoid human interaction though. Badgers do have a musk which would be heavy around their dens to tell intruders off, the size of it looks to be accurate for one, and maybe you could find some droppings around, or prints to see if there is one around that area.

Seems like a fox hole! We used to have a fox that lived in are golf course near by! With kits(baby foxes) and the hole looked like that❤❤

Maybe a cat den? Sometimes they have no other options, taking over other dens, don’t know what it was originally (saying it is a cat den even) but that’s pretty cool

Judging by the divits and hole, You have some lady clackers. It looks like a badger nest. Look around to see if there is torn grass, as they use it at the end of their tunnel system for beds. The stink is their musk that they release if provoked. You smelt it at the entrance, where other animials may have walked around. I know you love animals, But keep the kiddos away from that area until you KNOW what it is. Because you can be the nicest person in the world with every animal in the world loving you. . . However, "the badger dont give a ****"

By the size it seems like a fox or coyote den but you said musky smell which leads me to think its a badger. They can be musky smelling, and quite aggressive and dangerous so be careful, but they typically avoid human contact

It never stops amazing me how much Michigan looks like Wisconsin. It’s exactly the same type of forests, I could see a spot just like this in WI. I love them both so much!

It's either a fox or a badger actively using the hole, they both smell like death warmed over 🤣😂
Could have been dug by something else initially and it died or moved on.
