Also so much more pleasant to ride than being stuck in a dark tunnel with nothing to see.

I like elevated rail because you can see everything unlike the tunnels where you can only see the same concrete

Modern concrete elevated guideways are not particularly loud when kept maintained, for those wondering. That being said nothing prevents you from going underground through the densest areas!

Plus much cheaper to build / distance.

So many advantages, enjoying daylight and being able to see the scenery, at the same time much quicker and cheaper to execute, plus the sight of trains going by is a constant advertisement for public transit usage of over cars because you can still see everything including the traffic you’re not stuck in, as well as enjoy the seasons, and the architecture of the neighborhoods

The view from the Expo Line traveling into the city is one of the most amazing public transit rides I've ever taken: the North Shore mountains on the right, lots of density on the left, and the emergence of Vancouver and False Creek. It drives me mad that the Canada Line is halfway underground, the views it could have (and the Millenium Line Extension to Arbutus and eventually UBC) would be gorgeous.

That’s the one plus about New Jersey transit. Not every station was dirty, elevated rail can be cool.

The biggest issue for elevated rail is the space underneath, but it's an issue that fortunately has plenty of active solutions. Either "infill" the space like seen in London or Tokyo, or make it green like in Vancouver.

For places like NYC or Paris though sometimes the space under the viaduct becomes a bit of a dead zone if the street is not naturally very busy.

I couldn't imagine my beautiful Schönhauser Allee without the elevated U-Bahn

Would love to see a full video about elevated rail! There's so much potential that I just haven't seen talked about on transit YouTube.

Here in New York there’s been a decades long argument to extend the N/W line up, and then somehow east to be the “air-train” at LaGuardia. However, until recently there was a STUPID federal law blocking mass transit from serving airports, it would have to serve a separate people mover. (Aka, it was illegal to have a one-seat ride!) But all the NIMBYs along the way don’t want an “ugly” elevated line going by, even though the needs of the many and the greater good should out vote them. (Thankfully Cuomos backwards air-train to the Willets Point stop on the 7/LIRR (which is even farther east than the airport and would overwhelm both lines)) seems to be dead.)

Vancouver's skytrain is aestheticly pleasing

Elevated rail is good as long as it's not a monorail

In melbourne the sky rail is very cool. It put a lot of the line above ground and nice parks. Most of the new metros in China that expand to future communities are also placed above ground

Hearing Manchester in the UK we have quite a few heavy rail lines throughout the city that are on elevated archways dating from the 1800s.

A lot of the space underneath those arches has been opened for boutique shops and similar. It contributes quite nicely to the city's character.

This is my neighbourhood and as an Urban Planner I’m weirdly honoured to have you feature my neighbourhood (even though my impact on it is minimal af). 🎉

Something I've been wondering for some time is whether the Frankfurt U-Bahn should be elevated between Dornbusch and Heddernheim, given that it's the only portion of the stem line which is at grade (justification for grade separation) and also is the potentially cheaper option than building a tunnel throughout (my reason for elevation).

Seeing this pisses me off, because my city could EASILY add these, but they won't.

I’ve only taken Elevated metro systems like the Manila Light Rail Transit System, Manila Metro Rail Transit System, and the Vancouver Translink…seen what what you can be correct and wrong in creating such a system

The environment around this rail is gorgeous, the rail makes it even better.
