The fact is eggs existed way before chickens ever did, they just weren't for hatching chickens

I never understood why people had a problem understanding this. It's common sense.

An "almost-chicken" (but not a chicken) laid an egg that had a genetic mutation of some sort that made it a chicken as we know it today.

If you understand that living organisms have mutations that they pass on to their offspring, the egg "coming first" is obvious.

The thing that needs to be stressed is that evolution requires a population. There wasn't one chicken or one egg. There was a flock of red junglefowl that humans selectively bred for traits that were desirable for meat production. At some point in this process after many generations someone declared that these birds are now to be called chickens. The question: "which came first the chicken or the egg?" is in fact a sneakily disguised loaded question and should not be entertained.

Q: What came first chickens or eggs? A: eggs because before chickens there were lizards and lizards lay eggs Q: What came first lizards or eggs? A: eggs because before there were lizards there were frogs and frogs lay eggs. Q: What came first frogs or eggs? A: eggs because before there were frogs there were fish and fish lay eggs...
a few generations in between...
Q: What came first bacteria or the egg? A: That's tough because a bacterium is an egg that lays eggs.

“There never was a moment where a bird that was not a chicken gave rise to your mom”. Took me a while to understand that one. Thank you 🙏 😊

The main point of this conversation was that if you take a picture of your mother and her mother's mother and continue down the evolutionary track, eventually, there will be a photo of a fish.

I guess it’s kinda like asking which comes first a german shepherd pup or an adult german shepherd? Answer is there probably was a wolf that bred the first genetically accurate version of german shepherd that we know today it’s kinda like that

The egg came first since it's not specified to be "an egg from a chicken". However, a chicken is always specified as (but not limited to) "a bird which lays eggs".

When I was six years old I asked my mom to make me a boiled egg.
She did.
It was delicious.

Okay but thats not really the point of the question, where did the very first egg come from? Before there was an animal to lay it.

The egg was around millions of years before birds.

What resembles an egg the most? A cell, as life began with a single cell.
