Following my previous video about Baroque ornamentation and improvisation on Händel's Passacaille in G Minor, HWV 432, I decided to make a similar video focusing now on another famous piece by Händel, the Sarabande from the Keyboard Sonata in d minor, HWV 437.

This famous sarabande with two variations is the third movement of Händel's Suite No. 4 in D minor composed between 1703 and 1706 and published in 1733.

Which one did you like the most? Are there other pieces you'd like videos in this format?

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I'm writing my master thesis on improvisation in classical periods vs jazz vs world music, your videos helped me a lot and you've chosen great recordings! Greetings from central Poland.

This was wonderful! The first version that I ever heard decades ago was by Kipnis. I had purchased the tape for other pieces. (Later, I would end up buying the CD of the same album). When I heard his performance of the Sarabande, I fell in love SO HARD for the piece. It took a few decades (then, in the age of the internet) to find that the piece that Handel had written was much simpler, that Kipnis had added a ton of ornamentation. I was quite surprised. But I believe his is the version that still makes my heart flutter the most - the warmth of it, the, dare I say, passion in it. The second version I bought was by Sophie Yates (I got the entire suite HWV 437 in d minor). I may have 2 of the other ones on my YouTube playlist.

As I'm not a purist (though I think people should hear the original version - I mean, rather than remixes - at some point, if done well, covers and remixes can give a fresh perspective to an old, revered piece, so on my ipod (and YouTube playlist) I have many recordings of this piece on Harpsichord, Segovia's classical guitar recording (beautiful), plus other instrumentations. I LOVE this piece so much. Thank you for this video. It was enlightening to hear the different interpretations collected together.

Kipnis is always a benchmark, of course. I also like other fearless versions like Borgstede's. Wish there were a recording of Gergely Sarkozy. Thanks for this video - very helpful.
