"The Maple Leaf Forever" is a Canadian song written by Alexander Muir (1830--1906) in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. He wrote the work after serving with the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto in the Battle of Ridgeway against the Fenians in 1866.

In days of yore, from Britain's shore,
Wolfe, the dauntless hero, came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave, our boast, our pride
And, joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine
The Maple Leaf forever!
The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear, The Maple Leaf forever!
God save our Queen and Heaven bless
The Maple Leaf forever!

This would have made a perfect anthem if not for the lack of French lyrics. Something I would love to see is a French version of this anthem, something for loyal French Canadians to sing.

As a French-Canadian frog, I must say, this is our anthem, and that being said, bring it back!

"From Britain's shore in days of yore, Wolfe, the dauntless hero came,
And planted firm Britannia's (old England's originally) flag on Canada's fair domain,
Here may it wave, our boast our pride, and join in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwine, the Maple Leaf Forever?

The maple leaf, our emblem dear, The Maple Leaf Forever,
God save our Queen and Heaven bless, The Maple Leaf Forever

(Hope I got it right. I had a senior's moment.) There are other verses. The second starts off celebrating Lundy's Lane and Queenston Heights, and so on. All gone now, even in those versions that claim to be "original."

In the movie of the present Queen's coronation, when the Mounties rode past Buckingham Palace THIS was the tune that was played, not the dirge-like "Oh, Canada." I seem to recall that it was "Waltzing Matilda" that was played when the Aussie's marched past and NOT the unknown, "Advance Australia Fair." These old tunes are fast fading away and only those over a certain age can remember them. Thank Lester B. Pearson for all this. He was an earlier Liberal PM who got rid of our unofficial anthem, our flag, and accepted the idea of "Official" Bilingualism!! Canada hasn't been the same since. A lot of pride in our country disappeared with those old emblems.

Ahh back when Canada wasn't the Caliphate of DUDE WEED LMAO. A beautiful land of faith, tradition, and concordance. What a tragedy.
